Born and raised in Denver, CO, Sonia has thrived in creative environments as far back as she can remember.  She appreciates dogs, drag queens, and pizza. Her art explores the design of social identity, cultivating a body of work that dissects the archetypes dictating how we see each other as individuals. She enjoys questioning the way physical attributes account for perceptions of identity and the effect concealing them has on the curiosity of others. Absurdity and irony often play a role in her work while utilizing a cinematic aesthetic to emphasize the contrived nature of the environments she captures in her imagery. In 2012 she received her BFA in Photography and Art History from Metropolitan State University of Denver. Though the focus of her degree was photography, she also likes experimenting with several different mediums at once such as collage, painting, sewing, and knitting—deliberately challenging the divide between fine art and crafting.
